Beckham still eyes England shirt

14 April 2012

David Beckham has not given up hope of playing for England again.

The 31-year-old's 94th and most recent appearance in national team colours came during last summer's World Cup quarter-final against Portugal, when he was substituted soon after half-time.

Beckham resigned as England captain following the tournament, and he has been overlooked by new head coach Steve McClaren since.

A lack of first-team action at Real Madrid this season has hardly helped Beckham's bid to get back into the international fold, but the midfielder admits he still wants to play for England.

"For me, it has been the most important honour of my career to represent my country," he said. "I love wearing the England shirt, and I hope that in the future it will happen again."

In Beckham's absence, England have suffered an indifferent start to their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign and currently lie third in Group E with seven points from four games.

England's next qualifying match is against Israel on March 24.
