Bell seeks complete performance

12 April 2012

Ian Bell is hoping England can finally put together a complete performance against Bangladesh to lift their hopes of reaching the World Cup semi-finals.

England's displays so far in the tournament have been indifferent, with impressive periods of play undermined by lapses in discipline with the ball or batting collapses.

But Warwickshire batsman Bell believes if England can become more consistent they could be a threat, saying: "The important thing for us as a side is to put a complete game together. We've played some pretty decent cricket in the last two games but still lost, and now we need to put a complete game together."

He added: "We played well at the back end of the Sri Lanka game and did it in reverse against Australia, so for us now we have to put a good 50 overs together with the ball and in the field and also with the bat."

England's misfiring displays have given them a simple equation for qualification - win their remaining games against Bangladesh, South Africa and West Indies and hope the other results work out in their favour.

It is a similar scenario to the one they faced at the end of the Commonwealth Bank series in Australia, when successive victories over New Zealand and Australia earned them a place in the final and they exceeded expectations by winning both those games against the hosts.

"It's probably a similar situation to the one we were in during the one-day series in Australia," conceded Bell.

"We're in a position to have to win every game and have results go our way for us to qualify, so for us now it's exactly like Australia.

"We need to beat Bangladesh and then move on again.

"That's what we did pretty well in Australia and it's something we need to take forward, learn from what we did against Australia to help us now."
