Bent not looking for an easy ride at Spurs

13 April 2012

Darren Bent insists he hasn't been guaranteed first-team football at Tottenham.

The club record £16.5million signing said: "I think it's a bit unfair for people to talk about me and Dimitar Berbatov playing because Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe were both fantastic last season.

Tough task: Spurs' Darren Bent

"It's going to be difficult and I don't expect to walk into the team.

"They have several internationals there already, but as long as I can go there and fight for the cause and help Tottenham get into the top bracket then I'll be delighted."

Tottenham sporting director Damien Comolli believes the club are in a position to improve on last season's fifth-placed Premier League finish following the signings of Gareth Bale and Bent.

Bent's arrival at White Hart Lane from Charlton was announced yesterday, with the £16.5million deal smashing the club-record £11million paid for Sergei Rebrov seven years ago.

Wales left-back Bale joined earlier in a £10million deal from Southampton but there is more transfer activity tipped at Spurs before the start of the season, with boss Martin Jol looking to strengthen the left side of midfield.

Comolli said: "The two signings we've completed so far in Darren and Gareth Bale offer us massive improvement in terms of the squad, players with great potential whose best days are in front of them."
