Bond blow for Black Caps

12 April 2012

Shane Bond has been ruled out of New Zealand's final two Tests against Pakistan after suffering an abdominal tear.

The 34-year-old fast bowler felt some minor discomfort during the first Test in Dunedin and had an ultrasound scan on Tuesday which revealed a one centimetre tear.

Bond, who claimed eight wickets for 153 runs in the 32-run win in Dunedin, said: "It's frustrating. It's not what I expected."

He added: "This (the scan) was just a precaution because I'd had an injury in the same region in the past.

"There was a little bit of a niggle there during the game but by the last session there was nothing.

"This was just to make sure everything was good and I got a bit of a shock when they said there was a bit of a tear there."

There was better news regarding Iain O'Brien, who dislocated the middle finger of his right hand during the final session at University Oval.

The 33-year-old has been cleared of any fractures and is confident he will be able to play a full part in the second Test, which is due to begin at the Basin Reserve on Thursday.

A replacement for Bond will be brought into the squad - possibly Tim Southee - but the fast bowler's absence could see Daryl Tuffey, who is already in the squad, in line for his first Test start in five years.
