Boxer Amir Khan leads special aid convoy to help refugees in Greece

Two-time world champion boxer Amir Khan has launched a seven-van aid convoy to help refugees in Greece.

Thousands of people have fled across Europe in an effort to escape war-torn Syria but are in desperate need of basic necessities after arriving in Greece with little more than the clothes on their back.

Amir Khan's foundation has teamed up with international aid charity Penny Appeal to help the refugees' cause and the convoy left Bolton yesterday afternoon to begin a 2,000 mile journey to Athens.

The vans were packed with donated food, clothing, sleeping bags and toiletries and are expected to reach their destination on Friday, where Khan will help a group of volunteers to distribute the items by hand.

The 28-year-old has thanked the public for their generosity after receiving an abundance of donations that will directly help those that need it most.

“It’s heartbreaking to see images of children losing their lives as their families flee from devastating conflict.

“What’s even more disturbing is knowing that many more lives will be lost unless we provide urgent aid to these refugees who don’t have anyone to turn to.

“I’m just amazed at how many people came together to donate so much and it just shows how generous and kind the British public really are.”

People can still donate to the campaign here and any further funds that are raised will be used to purchase items such as food and shelter on places such as the Island of Lesbos, where up to one thousand refugees are arriving each day.
