Carl Frampton’s bid to become a three-weight world champion against Jamel Herring will now likely take place in the late summer or early autumn.

Frampton, who has previously held world title gold at super-bantamweight and featherweight, moved up to super-featherweight last November with a comprehensive points win over Tyler McCreary in Las Vegas.

The 33-year-old fighter now has his sights on Herring and was scheduled to meet the American for the WBO belt in June back home in Belfast.

However, the Covid-19 pandemic has forced fights across the board to be cancelled or moved to new dates with the sport brought to a standstill in efforts to curb the spread of the virus.

Frampton vs Herring is among those, with Irishman’s promoter Frank Warren working on a date later in the year in the Northern Irish capital.

“We were looking for June but that is not going to happen,” Warren told Standard Sport. “We will look to get it on for late summer or the early autumn now.”

Josh Taylor, who unified the WBA and IBF super lightweight titles in a Fight of the Year candidate against Regis Prograis last October, has also seen his fight moved. A homecoming title defence against Thailand’s Apinun Khongsong was originally scheduled for May 2 in Glasgow with Warren envisaging a similar timeframe for the rearranged title bout.

“It’s the same situation for Josh, we have to wait to see what happens but that will probably be around the same time as well.”

An all-London heavyweight showdown between Daniel Dubois and Joe Joyce was meant to kickstart an exciting summer for Warren and Queensberry Promotions, plans which have been put on ice due to the pandemic.

Dubois vs Joyce has been moved to July 11 as a result, with Warren insisting holding the fight behind closed doors was not an option and is unlikely to be considered should that rearranged date come under threat.

“That doesn't fit the criteria for that fight,” Warren said of Dubois vs Joyce being held in an empty arena. “It was nigh-on sold out. You can imagine what the atmosphere would be like. That fight needs to feed off the fans on the night.”
