Bulls agree Solomona deal

12 April 2012

Bradford and Wakefield have agreed a £200,000-plus deal that will take New Zealand Test forward David Solomona to Odsal.

The 28-year-old second rower will become a Bradford player once he passes a medical on a bicep injury and the paperwork is completed, which is expected to happen within a week. It is thought that Bulls back row forward Brett Ferres, 20, who is currently playing for England in the Federation Shield, will join Wakefield in part exchange.

"The two clubs have reached agreement on the terms and now various signatures need to be placed on the documents," said Bradford chairman Peter Hood.

"I see no reason why it shouldn't happen. It's just a question of signatures on the paperwork. The problem is that the player's agent is in Vietnam, the player is in New Zealand and Steve McNamara is in Mexico."

Ironically, the development comes on the day the Rugby Football League officially launched their investigation into claims that Bradford made an illegal approach for the player during the last few weeks of the season.

Solomona had two years left to run on his contract but would have become a free agent had the Wildcats been relegated and a host of rival Super League clubs began circling for his signature. Wakefield say the player was unsettled by the promise of more money and reluctantly agreed to his transfer request.

Bradford still have cash to spend following the record £450,000 transfer of Stuart Fielden to Bradford earlier this year.

Meanwhile, the imminent arrival of Solomona could trigger the departure of utility player Stanley Gene, who is expected to rejoin his old club Hull KR following their promotion to Super League.

The 32-year-old Gene was a popular figure at Craven Park, where he scored 94 tries in 111 games during a successful four-year spell from 1996.
