Byrne takes a Becks seat

David Beckham has appointed Watford director of football Terry Byrne as his new right-hand man.

The former Chelsea physio today announced he is quitting Vicarage Road for Madrid where he will become Beckham's personal manager.

Byrne, who became friends with the England captain through his role as the national team's masseur, described the job as "impossible to refuse".

His appointment is the latest move in a major shake-up of Beckham's management team, which has also seen him split from commercial agents SFX.

Standard Sport revealed last June that Beckham had started talking to key behind-the-scenes personnel. At that stage - weeks before his £25million transfer to Real Madrid - Byrne was understood to have been made a "name your price" offer.

Byrne said today: "I am disappointed that I won't be able to finish the job that I started, but I am excited about the new project that's come about and I believe it is an offer that was impossible to refuse."
