Cech: Drogba back to his best

14 April 2012

Petr Cech believes Didier Drogba is back to his best after a difficult season at Chelsea.

Drogba, 28, has started the new campaign in excellent form, scoring four goals in five Premiership games for the champions, incuding a superb winner against Liverpool on Sunday.

He has eclipsed new £30million signing Andriy Shevchenko and won back the Blues fans who jeered him last season.

And goalkeeper Cech said: "He got over this and you can see him playing well again for us. Last season, he was injured at the beginning of the season and it was difficult for him.

"Against Liverpool, he was the man of the match. He did everything. He was fighting and he kept fighting to the end of the game when everyone could see he was tired.

"He was on his limits, working hard and scored a spectacular goal. He's scored goals like this before, in his first season, and he's a great striker. He can do everything."

Drogba, a £24million signing from Marseille two years ago, has scored 26 goals in 60 league games for the Blues but appeared to be heading for the exit when he was booed by Chelsea's own supporters last season.

They reacted angrily to a dive against Manchester City, in March, and then jeered when he won the man-of-the-match award in the same game.

He was reportedly upset by Jose Mourinho's summer swoop for Shevchenko and talked about leaving the club because he was fed up with the criticism.

Mourinho convinced him to stay and Drogba has produced some of his best displays in a Chelsea shirt this season.

The left-footed half-volley against Liverpool was a wonderful piece of skill and hoisted the Blues level on points with Manchester United and just one point behind early pacesetters Portsmouth.

Drogba said: "I think it is my best goal since I arrived here. Not only my best goal but a very important one because of the way we won this game. It's normal that everyone is talking about Sheva (Shevchenko) because he is a Balon d'Or winner (European footballer of the year) and is a fantastic player.

"Because he arrived, everybody forgot about me but that's not a problem because we are still a team."
