Chambers: I'm a natural, but it is best to wait

13 April 2012

Anyone who wants to see Dwain Chambers make his rugby league debut for Castleford on Sunday had better arrive early at the club's Jungle ground.

The best they can hope for is to see the controversial athlete play for the reserves and not in the engage Super League showdown against St Helens.

Chambers: Education

Castleford said there was "no possibility" that Chambers would be picked for the first team and would only be considered for the reserves if he impressed coaching staff over the next two days.

Chief executive Richard Wright said: "Dwain is just beginning his rugby league education and we will continue to work with him."

Chambers, a self-confessed drugs cheat in athletics who has served a two-year ban and is entitled to pursue another career if he is not allowed to compete in the Beijing Olympics, welcomed the club's decision.

"I feel more comfortable about playing for the reserves because it takes a bit of the pressure off me," he told Sky Sports yesterday.

"It would allow me to get a feel for a game I have never played before. But the training is going well. I think I'm a natural because I have taken to it like a duck to water.

"But we'll see what my true colours are when I get out there and play. I'm not frightened. I know I'm going to get hit."

Chambers, who is on a 28-day trial at Castleford, also revealed that he has agreed to meet Britain's anti-doping chief John Scott, of UK Sport, to provide inside knowledge on drug offences.

Scott had criticised the sprinter for not doing enough to help the anti-doping cause.
