Clijsters on cruise control

Kim Clijsters continued to make untroubled progress at the Australian Open after securing a place in the third round with victory over Carla Suarez Navarro.

The Belgian, seeded number three, took just 44 minutes to rout Dinara Safina 6-0 6-0 in her first match in Melbourne and the early stages against Suarez Navarro were equally one-sided.

The Spaniard rallied in the second set but could not prevent Clijsters from cruising to a 6-1 6-3 win.

Clijsters came out firing and a wayward forehand from her opponent handed her an early break and 3-1 lead.

That swiftly became 5-1 as Clijsters broke again before wrapping up the set in 22 minutes.

The US Open champion continued to dominate and quickly established a 3-0 advantage in the second set before Suarez Navarro hit back to break and then hold to at least present Clijsters with something to ponder.

But she worked it out pretty quickly, breaking again to wrap up the match in 62 minutes.

"I was happy with the way I played, I tried to play inside the court and dictate the points and it worked," Clijsters said.

Meanwhile, second seed Vera Zvonareva survived a major scare before edging out teenager Bojana Jovanovski.

Zvonareva, who reached the final at the last two grand slams, looked in real danger when she was outplayed in the first set by the 19-year-old, but she hit back impressively to win 2-6 6-3 6-1.
