Clijsters' race against time

Kim Clijsters will wait until next week before deciding whether to play in this month's Australian Open.

The Belgian world No2's hopes of competing in the opening grand slam tennis tournament of the year depend on how quickly she can recover from the ankle injury she suffered during the Hopman Cup in Perth.

Doctors are only "cautiously optimistic" she will be fit in time for the start of the event on 19 January. Clijsters has yet to make a statement but her fiancee Lleyton Hewitt said she was "pretty distressed".
