Costly missed call upsets Umaga

12 April 2012

Wellington captain Tana Umaga claims a disputed try could cost the Lions a home quarter-final and a shot at the Air New Zealand Cup title.

Wellington defeated Otago 21-14 in their final top six match at Carisbrook on Friday, but missed a bonus point by only scoring three tries. A possible fourth, by Ma'a Nonu, was turned down after referee Kelvin Deaker and a touch judge elected not to use the television match official for a line call.

"I'm really disappointed in the referee's performance," Umaga told The Dominion Post. "We had a try taken away from us and all the feedback I've had, texts and people who saw it, obviously there was no problem, it was a try. When you've got the technology I don't know why they don't use it. It's very annoying. We worked so hard for four tries and in reality we scored four tries, but what can you do?"
