Coulthard blasts Fisichella for 'Clintonesque' claim on crash

13 April 2012

David Coulthard has slammed rival driver Giancarlo Fisichella for not admitting he was the cause of a spectacular crash at the start of the Turkish Grand Prix.

Coulthard laid into Fisichella after watching a replay of the Italian’s Force India car being launched high into the air after running into the Williams of Japan’s Kazuki Nakajima.

Talking ahead of this week’s Monaco Grand Prix, Coulthard said: “When I got home from Turkey I watched a tape of the race and one thing that struck me as remarkable was Fisichella’s statement that he didn’t feel he was to blame for his first-lap accident with Nakajima.

Hit out: Red Bull driver David Coulthard is stunned by Fisichella's comments

“He locked up, rammed the back of another car and crashed out.

"Who exactly did he think was to blame? That is shocking.

“We all take calculated risks from time to time, and some of them work and some don’t.

"But Fisichella’s claim was Bill Clintonesque in its blatant disregard for the facts.”

Coulthard has endured his own run of bad luck this season with collisions and breakdowns in his Red Bull.

But he was ninth in Istanbul and now the Scot is looking forward to racing in Monte Carlo, where has twice taken the chequered flag.

He said: “I’ll be aiming to open my points account.

"Hopefully, the tide of misfortune has now turned and I can get my season properly up and running.”
