Crampton targets Hoy

13 April 2012

Matt Crampton has pledged to take the fight to Sir Chris Hoy for Britain's sole spot in the men's keirin after his victory at last week's European Championships.

Hoy, the Olympic champion at the keirin, has dominated the event in recent seasons but missed the competition in Apeldoorn, Holland, because of a chest infection.

The Scot remains the favourite for Team GB's berth in the event at London 2012 but Crampton (right) has been buoyed by his European crown.

"It's so cut throat," said Crampton. "The team now is so tough. We have to seize these opportunities and take them on, as it really does make a difference. It clears any doubts over selection then."

Crampton should get a chance to test himself against Hoy in the keirin at the World Cup event in Kazakhstan, which starts in nine days.

"Hopefully, in Kazakhstan it will go well and then I'll look to really consolidate my place in the team," added the 25-year-old.
