Ashes 2019 cricket: England vs Australia second Test dates, schedule and team news from Lord's

England vs Australia
Second Ashes Test
Venue: Lord's
Date: 14-18 August, 2019
Start time: 11:00am (BST)

England go into this week’s second Ashes Test at Lord’s knowing defeat would leave them needing a minor miracle to regain the urn from Australia.

Joe Root’s men were beaten by 251 runs in the first Test at Edgbaston, and not since the 1930s has a team come from 2-0 down to win an Ashes series.

England have responded to that defeat by dropping out-of-form spinning all-rounder Moeen Ali, with left-armer Jack Leach set to come in for his Ashes debut after scoring a memorable 92 as nightwatchman against Ireland on this ground last month.

The other change to the England side is an enforced one, with James Anderson out after injuring his calf just four overs into his opening spell at Edgbaston. World Cup hero Jofra Archer is expected to make his Test debut after proving his fitness with seven wickets and a century for Sussex's second XI last week, with Sam Curran once again the unlucky man likely to miss out.

England’s primary problem will be getting the better of former Aussie captain Steve Smith. The 30-year-old was the difference between the sides in the first Test, scoring a century in both innings and, at times, looking impossible to dismiss.

The Aussies have decided against sticking with a winning formula, with James Pattinson left out of their 12-man squad. He will be replaced by either Mitchell Starc of Josh Hazlewood.

Weather looks set to play a key factor this week, with heavy rain forecast for Wednesday, as well as over the weekend.

Predicted line-ups

England XI: Burns, Roy, Root, Denly, Buttler, Stokes, Bairstow, Woakes, Archer, Broad, Leach

Australia XI: Bancroft, Warner, Khawaja, Smith, Head, Wade, Paine, Cummins, Siddle, Starc, Lyon
