Ben Stokes will be withdrawn from England’s Ashes squad should he remain under Police investigation when the tour begins.

The all-rounder, and Test vice-captain, was arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm after an incident outside a nightclub in Bristol last month and was subsequently suspended, along with Alex Hales – who was not named in the squad.

The 26-year-old was named in the squad to travel to Australia at the end of the month, but according to reports from BBC Sport will be withdrawn should the police investigation not be concluded before the tour.

Although the first Test is not until late November, England fly to the Southern Hemisphere on October 28.

Should the investigation finish before the squad travel out, the ECB will then assess the findings before making a call on whether or not Stokes will keep his place on the plane.

There has been no timescale set on the investigation, leaving Stokes with an anxious wait over the coming weeks.
