Jason Gillespie would be an ideal coach for England’s cricket team, according to his former captain Ricky Ponting.
Peter Moores is under pressure after England’s dismal performance in the World Cup, and even though Yorkshire coach Gillespie appeared to rule himself out, he shares close links with incoming ECB chairman Colin Graves.
Ponting was Gillespie’s skipper when he played for Australia and believes he would make a successful coach for England.
“Someone of Dizzy’s character and background might just be the right man for England,” said Ponting in his column for ESPNcricinfo. “An overly-structured and ‘set in their ways’ approach – with a very intense coach and a lot of emphasis on analysis and data – can cause some angst to emerge.
“Dizzy has shown at Yorkshire that he can create an environment that is more relaxed but is still focused and successful.”
England’s assistant coach Paul Farbrace has admitted it is unthinkable for the team to lose their final World Cup match against Afghanistan tomorrow. “If losing the game to Bangladesh was terrible, we couldn’t possibly imagine what it will be like if (Friday) goes against us,” he said.“That would be horrendous.”
