Mark Wood has been ruled out of the remainder of England’s tour of the West Indies and his Indian Premier League stint with Lucknow Super Giants by an elbow injury.

Wood suffered the injury on the third day of the First Test in Antigua last week, and has undergone two scans since arriving in Barbados.

Those scans confirmed that he is out of this series and the IPL. He will return to the UK next week to seek a specialist’s opinion on the injury, but will have “an indefinite break” from the game.

To miss both this series and the IPL is a bitter blow for Wood. He was picked up in last month’s auction by new franchise Lucknow for £735,000 and, while insurance will be in place, the full amount will not be covered.

England are yet to confirm whether they will call up fast-bowling cover for the Third Test in Grenada, which starts next Friday, but Ollie Robinson is close to a return to fitness after a back spasm and Craig Overton will be over his bout of sickness. Matt Fisher and Saqib Mahmood are both making their debuts in the Barbados Test.

This injury is a significant concern for England, who have been without Jofra Archer for a year with a stress fracture to his right elbow.
