Crouch backed to beat England record

12 April 2012

Peter Crouch can become England's record goalscorer - according to team-mate Steven Gerrard.

The Liverpool striker scored twice against Andorra in Saturday's 5-0 Euro 2008 qualifier victory at Old Trafford. That took him to 10 goals in 13 appearances for his county. Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton is England's top scorer with 49 goals.

"Peter's goal record is frightening," Gerrard told the Daily Mirror. "He is a great finisher. I hope he beats Bobby Charlton's record.

He added: "If he gets the right service he is going to put the ball in the net."
