Mark Cavendish has been warned he must put his Tour de France ambitions to one side if he is to make Britain’s cycling track team for the Olympic Games.

Despite winning madison gold in the final event of the World Championships in London yesterday, Cavendish’s selection for Team GB hangs in the balance.

The madison is not an Olympic discipline and the Manxman could finish only sixth in the omnium, which is the event he is targeting for Rio.

He faces competition from Jon Dibben, who won the world’s points race, to claim Britain’s lone place in the discipline and British Cycling team boss Shane Sutton has told Cavendish to diminish his Tour ambitions to have any Olympic hopes. “For sure, he will be at the Tour — 100 per cent,” said Sutton. “But Cav won’t do three weeks of the Tour. If he wants to medal, he’s well aware that he probably wouldn’t be going to Paris.”

Meanwhile, Laura Trott won her second gold yesterday with victory in the women’s omnium.
