England on Wright track

Big ideas: Luke Wright batters the Kiwis

Luke Wright goes into tomorrow's third one-day international against New Zealand in Bristol insisting the current England limited-overs squad is capable of great things.

The Sussex all-rounder joins the likes of Stuart Broad and Ravi Bopara in a developing team that has beaten New Zealand in both the Twenty20 International and the opening match of the NatWest Series last Sunday - before rain denied a result on Wednesday at Edgbaston.

Wright, 23, said: "I think we showed how good a side we are when we play well. The boys are all confident and we all believe we've got a really good squad and we still have Andrew Flintoff to come back.

"We're confident we can go out to Pakistan [for the Champions Trophy in September] and do well, but we have to develop during this summer. Our main focus is trying to win this series, but New Zealand showed on Wednesday what a good side they are.

"They're third in the one-day rankings and they put us under a lot of pressure, but I'm sure if we play to the best of our ability we can reproduce the type of performance we gave at Durham in the next match."

Left-arm seamer Ryan Sidebottom will have a fitness test later today, having had an injection on the stiff back which forced him to sit out the match at Edgbaston on Wednesday.

Essex left-hander Alastair Cook is doubtful with his shoulder injury.

At least the chances of a positive result in the event of rain have improved with the International Cricket Council belatedly ruling that the interval between innings can be cut to 10 minutes after Wednesday's farce at Edgbaston.
