England pegged back by Kiwis

12 April 2012

Captain Michael Vaughan hoped to cash in on his good Lord's record as England were pegged back in the first npower Test.

Vaughan came into the match against New Zealand on the back of 135 runs in seven innings for Yorkshire this summer but buoyed by the fact five of his 17 England hundreds have been at Lord's.

He survived a couple of hairy moments - the most notable a marginal decision for leg before wicket which went in his favour on 30 - as he anchored the side to 208 for six.

The unlucky bowler on that occasion was the impressive Chris Martin, who earlier produced two cracking deliveries to account for Alastair Cook (61) and Ian Bell (16).

Despite the good batting conditions on the fourth day, England lost four wickets for 59 runs either side of lunch.

Andrew Strauss, who hit 63, and Kevin Pietersen were both lbw victims, to Jacob Oram and Daniel Vettori respectively after a change of ball delivered a change of fortune for the New Zealanders.

England openers Cook and Strauss brought up their first-ever hundred opening stand early on the fourth morning of a contest decimated by the weather.

Umpires Simon Taufel and Steve Bucknor agreed to a change of ball after 32 overs, when England were 93 without loss, due to the initial one had changed shape.

And Martin was celebrating a success in the eighth over with the replacement as, having been struck for two boundaries earlier in the over, he found the outside edge of Cook's bat.

Left-arm spinner Vettori had England reeling after the mid-afternoon drinks break, however, with two wickets in as many balls. Paul Collingwood edged to slip and wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose shouldered arms to become the third lbw victim of the innings.
