England plan stand-by replacement

12 April 2012

England confirmed their intention to call up a replacement bowler on stand-by for the injured Steve Harmison, after Wednesday's first NatWest Series match against Pakistan.

The selectors were unable to advise on Monday night - when it was announced Harmison would miss the five-match limited-overs series because of a back injury - when or if they would name a replacement.

Now they have clarified that they do intend to do so - although that will not happen until after the day-night international in Cardiff.

The obvious likelihood is that the replacement player will come from among the 30 names announced in England's initial one-day squad but omitted from the 16 picked to face Pakistan.

Test seamer Matthew Hoggard and Harmison's uncapped Durham team-mate Graham Onions are therefore probable candidates.
