England set for Kiwi clash

12 April 2012

Defending champions England set up a mouth-watering Cup quarter-final with New Zealand at the Hong Kong Sevens after recording a hard-fought 19-14 victory over Argentina.

Ben Ryan's side held a 19-7 lead heading into the final two minutes, but a David Seymour missed tackle allowed Mariano Dobal to cross under the posts to set up a thrilling finale.

Argentina, needing a win to secure a place in the Cup quarter-final following victory over Hong Kong earlier in the day, dominated the closing stages and over two minutes of injury time and came close on several occasions to grabbing a dramatic win but the England defence stood firm.

New Zealand topped Group D with a 100% record after breezing past Kenya 50-14 in their final game following victories over Russia and Italy.

The All Backs hold the upper hand against England in recent meetings after recording quarter-final victories in Wellington and San Diego in the previous two tournaments of the World Sevens Series.

"We've played them twice in quarter-finals and it would be tough to lose again," said Harlequins wing Charlie Amesbury, who ran in four tries during England's 38-14 victory over Korea earlier in the day. "We have a few things to work on, but we are playing well.

"The four tries against Korea were nice, but the lads did well to get me in."
