Europe on course to retain title

12 April 2012

Jim Furyk and Tiger Woods claimed a vital point for the USA as they took the honours three and two in the final Ryder Cup foursomes game over Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley.

Europe are still in command however, leading 10-6, and are a step closer towards retaining the Cup thanks to Paul Casey`s magnificent hole in one.

Casey and his foursomes playing partner David Howell had secured an emphatic five and four victory over Stewart Cink and Zach Johnson to increase Europe's advantage over the Americans.

Just half an hour earlier Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald beat Phil Mickelson and David Toms two and one, while Colin Montgomerie and Lee Westwood's game with Chad Campbell and Vaughn Taylor finished all square.

In the morning fourballs, Woods and Furyk were beaten three and two by Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood.

Garcia and Jose Maria Olazabal also made it two wins out of two with an equally assured three and two win over Mickelson and Chris DiMarco.

Casey made a superb birdie on the 18th to snatch a second half of the week with Robert Karlsson against JJ Henry and Cink, while in the final match Johnson and Scott Verplank clinched a two and one win over Harrington and Henrik Stenson.

Meanwhile, Colin Montgomerie and David Toms (11.15am) will be the first to tee off Sunday`s singles.

They will be quickly followed by Garcia and Cink (11.27am) and Casey and Furyk (11.39), as Europe seek the four and a half points required to win outright.

Sunday`s tee-off times: Montgomerie v Toms (11.15am); Garcia v Cink (11.27am); Casey v Furyk (11.39am); Karlsson v Woods (11.51am); Donald v Campbell (12.03pm); McGinley v Henry (12.15pm); Clarke v Johnson (12.27pm); Stenson v Taylor (12.39pm); Howell v Brett Wetterich (12.51pm); Olazabal v Mickelson (13.03pm); Westwood v DiMarco (13.15pm); Harrington v Verplank (13.27)
