Fans will be helped to get to The Open

Organisers of The Open are offering to help pay for golf fans to get to Turnberry in July.

In light of the credit crunch, the Royal and Ancient Club are taking steps to boost the attendance when Padraig Harrington goes for a third successive title.

"We are encouraging clubs to bring members and the R&A will pay £250 towards the cost of a coach," said director of championships David Hill. "We're asking them to bring 30 people."

R&A chief executive Peter Dawson dismissed a report that Royal Troon had been put on standby because of problems completing renovation work at Turnberry's five-star hotel in time. "That has never been discussed," he said.
