Fantastic Fargus grabs bronze

13 April 2012

Britain's Joanna Fargus produced a storming finish to snatch 200m backstroke bronze for Britain at the World Championships in Japan today.

The 18-year-old University of Bath swimmer moved up from fifth in the final 50 metres to claim Britain's fourth medal of the championships in Fukuoka.

Fargus clocked two minutes 11.05 secs - just 0.01 secs outside her own British record.

Romania's Olympic champion Diana Mocanu won in 2:09.94 with Russia's Stanislava Komarova second in 2:10.43.

Britain have now won one gold, silver and two bronze medals in the opening five days of the championships - just months after failing to win an Olympic medal for the first time since the 1936 Games.

Fargus had high hopes of adding to the tally after qualifying for the final with the second best time.

But after turning for the final time those hopes looked bleak as she lay fifth, but Fargus - who lived in Australia for several years before returning to Britain - conjured up a spirited finish to claim her first major championship medal.
