Ferguson ahead of Wenger in the race for riches

14 April 2012

Manchester United take on Arsenal tonight but Sir Alex Ferguson has already put one over his arch rival Arsene Wenger in the wallet stakes.

Ferguson may have lost the Premiership to the Gunners but he is still the UK's wealthiest soccer manager, according to the FourFourTwo Football Rich List.

The United boss is worth £15million, outstripping other football chiefs to the moneybags title.

But Ferguson is well behind Arsenal's Dennis Bergkamp. The veteran striker is the richest player in the Premiership, according the survey.

The Dutchman has amassed a staggering £37m fortune during his 18-year career. And he is in line for a further boost to his bank balance by negotiating a new Arsenal contract that will entitle him to a lucrative Highbury testimonial.

Bergkamp's manager Wenger is a poor relation and has to settle for a share of third place with Manchester City's Kevin Keegan on the manager's list.

Of the chiefs, only Ferguson and second-placed Sven-Goran Eriksson make it into the top 100 people in British football at No92 and 100, respectively.

Ferguson has built up his wealth over 25 years in the manager's seat at Aberdeen and United.

Unsurprisingly, the richest man in British football is Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, who has a £7.5billion fortune.

Ferguson is the only manager to have won the treble of Premiership, Champions League and FA Cup, and has also done the Double twice.

He is reported to be a on a contract worth £11m over three years.

He also got £1m from his autobiography and a £2.5m settlement in the Rock of Gibraltar racehorse wrangle.

But Fergie will have to put up with three of his players beating him in the finance stakes. Captain Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand are all rated at £20m and are equal 74th in the Top 100.

David Beckham is now worth four times more than Ferguson. The Real Madrid star is the nation's richest footballer. He has accrued a personal fortune of £65m.
