Ferguson values United's style

12 April 2012

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed it is the style of Manchester United's success as much as the trophies themselves which make him proud of his 20-year stint at Old Trafford.

Ferguson celebrates an incredible two decades as United manager on Monday, when football's great and good will gather for a lunch in his honour to acknowledge his achievement.

"You are going to be judged by trophies," Ferguson said. "But I also feel the way we have done it has been good. It has been the right way, the Manchester United way. We have not changed in that respect."

As the most decorated manager Britain has ever produced, the Scot is already certain of his place in history.

But as well as the honours, which include eight Premiership titles, five FA Cups and the never-to-be-forgotten Champions League triumph in 1999, Ferguson also brought the swagger back to United's play after almost 20 years in the doldrums.

He added: "If you don't win, you are not going to here for 20 years. I am proud of what we have achieved here. It has been an incredible spell and hopefully we will win more things at this club.

"Sometimes we get carried away with our attacking instincts but you may as well die in a glorious way than not."

Not only have United blazed a trail in terms of their attacking intent, Old Trafford also continues to provide a stage for some of the game's heavyweight stars.

Throughout Ferguson's time at the club, the likes of Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, Peter Schmeichel, David Beckham, Roy Keane and Ruud van Nistelrooy have passed through, plus many more besides.

Now it is the turn of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo to live up to the legacy of George Best, Bobby Charlton and Denis Law. "Supporters who have followed this club for 50 years are very lucky people because we always seem to produce someone who can light up the stage," said Ferguson.
