Fine for Morgan

12 April 2012

Hull KR coach Justin Morgan has been fined £4,000 - half of it suspended - after being found guilty of misconduct for publicly criticising a referee.

The 33-year-old Australian, who is Super League's longest-serving coach, accused match official Ben Thaler of being "substandard" and allowing Huddersfield to "get away with blue murder" during his side's 30-8 home defeat on Easter Monday.

Morgan was subsequently charged by the Rugby Football League with breaching the game's RESPECT policy and appeared on Wednesday evening in front of an operational rules tribunal at the League's Red Hall headquarters in Leeds.

He must pay half the fine, which will go towards the League's RESPECT campaign, within the next 28 days, with the rest suspended until the end of the season.

Tribunal chairman Jim Spencer said: "Everybody in the game is entitled to respect."

Speaking at the time of the defeat, Morgan said: "I am going to teach my side this week to throw forward passes, stand offside all day and tackle round the head because every time we get him, we get the raw end of the stick.

"If I had a player that wasn't up to standard he gets dropped.

"He needs to spend some time learning the rules and getting in a position where he can understand the game better.

"It is absolutely disgraceful every time we get him. He is not up to this standard at all. He needs to spend some time at another grade, just like my players would.

"We turned up with the right attitude but got caned by the bloke in the middle and that is not acceptable in my eyes. Next time we get him we know what to expect - a substandard performance."
