Fitness concerns for duo

14 April 2012

Sven-Goran Eriksson is hoping that England will have a clean bill of health for Thursday's Euro 2004 quarter-final against Portugal.

John Terry and David Beckham sustained knocks during last night's victory against Croatia and have emerged as England's main fitness concerns.

But Eriksson expects both players to train fully tomorrow, even if he will have to wait until after that session in the Estadio da Luz before he can finalise his line-up for the last-eight clash.

Terry revealed: "My knee locked up when I went for a header and I landed on one foot. But it's all okay - definitely."

Beckham added: "I got a kick on the same ankle (that he had injured before) but it shouldn't be a problem. It's unfortunate that we've got just the two days to recover but we've got to do it."

Eriksson is said to be confident that he can pick a first-choice side, with none of his players suspended and all bookings from the group stage having been rescinded.

The England squad were put through a light recovery session at their hotel in Lisbon today after last night's exertions, with the emphasis on recuperation ahead of Thursday's game.

After all, Portugal have had a further 24 hours to recovery from their game against Spain on Sunday evening.

Owen Hargreaves, who had been suffering from a stomach upset, today visited the England training ground to step up his fitness levels, while Nicky Butt continued rehabilitation from a knee injury.
