Folan piles pressure on Pardew

12 April 2012

West Ham's miserable run without a win continued as they crashed out of the Carling Cup at the hands of League One side Chesterfield at Saltergate.

Caleb Folan threaded the ball through Robert Green's legs with three minutes remaining to extend the Premiership side's losing streak to eight games.

Marlon Harewood had ended the Hammers' run of seven games without a goal when he lashed in a volley after four minutes.

The hosts levelled nine minutes into the second half when Green tipped Folan's shot onto the post and Colin Larkin steered in the rebound, then Folan sealed the 2-1 win late on.

Birmingham manager Steve Bruce took his side to former club Sheffield United and claimed a 4-2 victory at Bramall Lane.

Bruce watched as the hosts took the lead through a fine Ade Akinbiyi strike but the Championship promotion hopefuls were level after a fluke goal from Dudley Campbell before the break.

Nicklas Bendtner's cool finish with 20 minutes remaining put Blues ahead and Cameron Jerome made it 3-1. Nick Montgomery pulled one back but Sebastian Larsson sealed the win with Birmingham's fourth.

New Leeds boss Dennis Wise was at Elland Road as his side were defeated by Southend.

The hosts fell behind to a penalty from Steven Hammell and a strike from Gary Hooper.

Ian Moore pulled one back a minute before the break but Hooper restored Southend's two-goal advantage and it remained 3-1.
