West Ham are 'apprehensive' regarding Aaron Cresswell's knee injury and fear the defender could miss a substantial part of the 2016/17 season, club co-chairman David Gold has confirmed.

Cresswell went down clasping his knee after a crunch challenge late on in the 3-0 friendly win over Karlshruher on Saturday, and immediately signalled to the bench.

Tempers threatened to boil over as Winston Reid and Mark Noble charged towards their opponents and a huddle had to be broken up, and the Hammers will now assess the extent of Cresswell's problem.

When asked by a fan on Twitter regarding the extent on Cresswell's injury, Gold confirmed reports from West Ham fan site claretandhugh.com that the defender could be out 'for a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of six months.'

Gold wrote: "CandH sources are accurate and we are apprehensive but it doesn't look minor.

"We await the scans in the next day or so good luck Aaron. dg"

Slaven Bilic was left to reflect on the only disappointment of an otherwise impressive pre-season display from the Hammers ahead of their Europa League third qualifying match against NK Domzale on Thursday.

“The only downside of this game is that we have to see what is [wrong] with Cresswell," Bilic told the club's official website.
