AC Milan will not attempt to sign Chelsea's Cesc Fabregas because the Spain international does not have "the right characteristics" to play in a defensive midfield partnership, according to coach Vincenzo Montella.

Fabregas has lost his starting role at Stamford Bridge this season under new boss Antonio Conte, with the former Juventus and Italy coach preferring the likes of N'Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic to sit deep in midfield to protect the defence.

The 29-year-old Spaniard insists he will fight to stay in west London despite reports linking him with a January move away from Chelsea, with Milan one of the clubs reportedly interested in his signature even before Riccardo Montolivo was ruled out for six months with a knee injury.

However, Rossoneri boss Montella has told Il Corriere della Sera that Fabregas would not be a suitable replacement for Montolivo, or even suit Milan's tactics.

"We're looking for a player who has the characteristics that Montolivo has, who can also operate in a defensive-midfield two," Montella said.

"Fabregas? He doesn't have those characteristics."

Fabregas has made just one Premier League start for Chelsea this season, with a lack of game time costing him his place in Julen Lopetegui's Spain national squad.

The midfielder inadvertently found himself the centre of a social media storm last week after posting a picture of two pizzas, milkshakes and cakes on his Snapchat account on Tuesday evening.

Unfortunately for Fabregas, his pizza post resulted in the midfielder being bombarded with messages on Twitter that suggested he would now be sold by Chelsea in January because he broke Antonio Conte's rules about fast food.

But Fabregas quickly cleared up the situation by posting another picture on Snapchat which read: "Remember I have four kids".
