Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has responded to speculation over a tweet following Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat to Chelsea, insisting he had “obviously” not meant to like the message regarding Arsene Wenger's future.

Pictures emerged on social media after the game showing a Twitter post by Youtube channel Arsenal Fan TV - with the title Wenger needs to go' - that had been liked by Oxlade-Chamberlain, though the like was soon removed.

Standard Sport understands that Oxlade-Chamberlain is 'mortified' by the incident, and subsequently posted on Twitter to confirm that he had not meant to like the post.

"I didn't mean to like that post earlier obviously," he wrote. "Didn't even realise I had!"

Arsenal’s convincing defeat at Stamford Bridge left them 12 points off league leaders Chelsea and after the match Oxlade-Chamberlain, who was one of the few visitors who impressed, playing in an unfamiliar midfield role, admitted the title may now be beyond the Gunners.

"It’s slipped further out of our hands and there’s no hiding from that now,” he said. “The gap is much bigger now and it’s going to be hard.

"But we play for Arsenal Football Club - if we don’t go until the end, we don’t deserve to be here. We’ve got to keep doing that."
