Arsenal medical staff do not expect Alexis Sanchez to return from his hamstring injury in time for the crucial home game against Manchester City a week on Monday.

The Chile forward limped off early in the second half on last month’s 1-1 draw against Norwich, since when he has been recovering in Chile.

Sanchez will resume training on Monday but Arsene Wenger admitted his star man was not currently expected to return for the visit of Manuel Pellegrini’s side, who hope to have their own South American star, Sergio Aguero, back in action.

Speaking after a 2-0 win over Aston Villa that took Arsenal to the top of the league Wenger refused to entirely rule out his attacker, saying: “The closest to having a chance [of playing against Manchester City] is Alexis.

“Medically, we think - my people think, he will not be ready but Alexis being Alexis, you never know…

“It is a big game and we want to win at home and beat City at home. There are now eight days to prepare and it will be a interesting one but we can at least recover and prepare then.”
