Allegations ‘will not hurt’ England’s World Cup bid

11 April 2012

A senior FIFA member believes England's bid to host the 2018 World Cup will not be damaged by claims in the Sunday Times of vote-selling by two executive committee officials.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter said the affair has had a "negative impact" on football's world governing body.

But one prominent member of the 24-man committee, Chuck Blazer, does not believe England's bid will be hurt by the allegations.

"I don't think this is an issue which will have an anti-English backlash in the executive committee," he said. "If it had been in a Spanish paper, would that damage the Spanish bid? I don't think so."

Executive committee members Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii allegedly asked for payments in exchange for their votes.

But Temarii, president of the Oceania Football Confederation, today welcomed an investigation into the claims.

"FIFA vice president Reynald Temarii will cooperate fully with the FIFA ethics committee and the FIFA secretary general," a statement from the OFC said. "Reynald Temarii welcomes a thorough investigation so that all the facts can be heard."
