Andros Townsend was today at Newcastle’s training ground to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms ahead of his £12million move from Tottenham.

Townsend travelled to the north-east on Tuesday and reported to Newcastle’s Darsley Park training base this morning.

The England winger, 24, is expected to sign a contract worth about £40,000 a week, which would run at least until the summer of 2020.

Townsend feared he would be left stranded at Tottenham for the remainder of the season as Spurs refused to budge on their initial £14m asking price.

Yet Standard Sport understands a conversation between Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and his Newcastle counterpart Mike Ashley provided a breakthrough. It is believed this is the first time the pair had spoken directly about the Townsend deal.

If there are no late hitches, Townsend can expect to make his debut for Newcastle in their Premier League fixture at Everton next Wednesday.
