Aaron Cresswell has backed Andy Carroll to earn an England recall as he offers "a different dimension" to the squad.

The West Ham striker has not represented his country in almost five years; his last appearance as a substitute in a 5-0 win over San Marino on October 12, 2012.

Carroll has two goals in nine senior outings and was on the standby list of World Cup 2014 but has otherwise been overlooked by the previous three England managers.

Cresswell, though, sees no reason by Carroll can stake a credible claim to head to Russia next summer, telling Sky Sports: "Of course he can.

"Everyone knows what Andy is capable of, especially in the air, and you could say it's a different dimension and that different way of playing.

"If Andy stays fit between now and the end of the season, there is no reason why he can't be in contention.

"Everyone wants to be pushing for that World Cup spot and all you can do is keep playing your best week in, week out and hope to make that plane."
