Arsenal eliminated from Champions League after 10-2 aggregate loss to Bayern Munich

Arsenal have been knocked out of the Champions League after a 10-2 aggregate loss to Bayern Munich.

Theo Walcott gave the Gunners an early lead on the night and could have further reduced the aggregate deficit with better finishing in front of goal.

The game turned after the break when Laurent Koscielny was sent off for a push on Robert Lewandowski. The Pole scored the subsequent penalty before Arjen Robben, Douglas Costa and Arturo Vidal piled on the misery once again.

The elimination is the seventh consecutive at the last-16 stage for the Gunners, having last reached the quarter-finals in 2009-10 where they were knocked out by a Lionel Messi-inspired Barcelona.

The 5-1 first-leg loss three weeks ago mounted further pressure on Arsene Wenger amid speculation over a possible contract extension, with fans protesting over the Frenchman's continued tenure ahead of kick-off on Tuesday.

Standard Sport understands no decision has been made on Wenger's future beyond the end of the season, though a two-year contract extension is on the table.

A number of former Arsenal players have come out against and in support of Wenger following defeats domestically and in Europe left the FA Cup as Arsenal's only realistic shot at silverware.

Ex-captain Frank McLintock, Lee Dixon and Alan Smith have all called on the 67-year-old to end his 20-year reign.

Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny have come out in support of contract extension, the former insisting the squad is "100 per cent" behind Wenger.

Attentions now turn back to domestic matters for the remainder of the campaign, with the visit of non-league outfit Lincoln City on Saturday with a place in the FA Cup semi-finals at stake.

Saturday's 3-1 loss at Liverpool, coupled with Chelsea's 2-1 in over West Ham at the London Stadium, has seen Arsenal fall 16 points behind the Premier League leaders having played a game less.
