Arsenal star Gabriel earns first Brazil call-up after fine form, Ghana sweating over Thomas Partey fitness

Arsenal defender Gabriel has earned his first call up to the Brazil national team squad.

The centre-back has been selected by head coach Tite after confirmation that Benfica’s Lucas Verissimo was forced to withdraw due to injury.

This is the first time Gabriel has been called up to the senior setup after playing for Brazil at Under-23 and Under-20 level.

The 23-year-old could make his debut against Colombia on Friday and even face rivals Argentina next week.

Gabriel has been in fine form for Arsenal this season and his call-up comes after consecutive clean sheets, sending the Gunners into the international break unbeaten in ten games.

The defender is one of a number of players heading off on international duty, although a decision is yet to be made on Thomas Partey.

The midfielder is due to link up with Ghana, but he missed Sunday’s win over Watford with a tight groin and Arsenal are assessing his fitness before releasing him.

On Monday, Emile Smith Rowe was called up to the England squad after Marcus Rashford’s injury withdrawal.
