Arsenal injury return: Alexis Sanchez could appear against Sunderland

Comeback charge: Sanchez may appear next week

Alexis Sanchez could make his return from a hamstring injury in next week’s FA Cup tie against Sunderland.

The Chilean forward has missed Arsenal’s last six games since pulling up in a 1-1 draw away to Norwich City.

Sanchez had been in line for a return against Manchester City before Christmas until he aggravated his injury, ruling him out for an entire festive period that has seen Arsenal move to the top of the Premier League.

Though Mesut Ozil, Theo Walcott and Joel Campbell have shouldered the burden of attacking production in the absence of Arsene Wenger’s star forward his return would be vital ahead of a challenging run of fixtures for the title contenders.

Wenger may well choose not to start Sanchez in the cup match, preferring to ensure he gets competitive action ahead of a trip to Anfield four days later.

That is followed by matches against Stoke and Chelsea, with February also bringing a run of games against Leicester City, Barcelona and Manchester United.
