Former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira has been appointed head coach of Nice following his departure from New York City FC.

The 41-year-old succeeds Lucien Favre, who left the French side to join Borussia Dortmund in May.

Vieira has been with New York since 2016 and previously took charge of Manchester City's academy side.

In a statement released on City's website on Sunday, Vieira said: "I would like to thank City Football Group and New York City FC for the opportunity to have coached this tremendous football club.

"Leaving New York is an incredibly difficult decision for me and for my family and one that has not been taken lightly.

"From the beginning, City Football Group and its leadership, particularly our chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Brian Marwood, Ferran Soriano and Marty Edelman, have believed in me and have helped guide me through the last eight years of my career – starting with my time as a player and ultimately culminating with my first opportunity to manage a first team."

He was linked with the Arsenal job following Arsene Wenger's departure at the end of the season, but has now taken his first job in Europe in Ligue 1.

Nice finished eighth in France's top division last term meaning Vieira will not lead his new side in European competition next term.
