Jack Wilshere must prove his fitness with the Arsenal youth side once more before being considered for the first team, Arsene Wenger has said.

Wilshere came through a 90-minute run-out for the Under 21s in their 3-1 defeat at Swansea yesterday - Tomas Rosicky also played 71 minutes - and he will play another game at that level on Monday night before being considered for first team action.

Wenger said: “He needs one more game at least with the U21s. He should be involved on Monday night.

“I have to see how he is compared to all the other competitors for places in the first-team.

“Once he is through, with three or four games at that level, of course you consider him. Of course.”

Wenger refused to confirm whether Per Mertesacker will return or who will start in goal against Crystal Palace on Sunday with Petr Cech having been left on the bench for the last two matches in favour of David Ospina despite recovering from a hamstring injury.
