Alexis Sanchez allayed Arsene Wenger’s fears over his hamstring injury by scoring twice for Chile last night and coming through their game against Uruguay unscathed.

Wenger had warned playing him would be a “suicidal” decision after the Arsenal forward suffered a muscle tear in training last week.

But Sanchez eased those concerns with a match-winning performance before he was taken off after 84 minutes as Chile won 3-1 in their World Cup qualifier.

Sanchez will now return to London where he will be assessed by Arsenal ahead of their trip to Manchester United on Saturday.

Wenger will want his medical staff to have a close look at the 27-year-old to check if playing him at Old Trafford is a fitness gamble.

The Arsenal manager felt Sanchez was at risk of an injury that could have ruled him out for months last night so may be cautious about him playing two games in a week.

But Wenger will be relieved Sanchez, who played with his thigh heavily strapped last night, had no apparent problems.
