Arsenal to let Almunia go for £1.5m in January sales

Not needed: Arsenal are likely to sell Almunia as Arsene Wenger is increasingly looking to his younger keepers
11 April 2012

Arsenal will allow goalkeeper Manuel Almunia to leave the club in the January transfer window.

The Spanish goalkeeper has not featured since suffering an elbow injury in the shock 3-2 defeat at home by West Brom in September and is no longer considered Arsene Wenger's first-choice No1.

The Arsenal manager selected rookie goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny for Monday's 1-0 defeat at Manchester United when Lukasz Fabianski was ruled out through injury, despite Almunia claiming he was fit to play.

Wenger will allow the 33-year-old to leave if the club's £1.5million valuation is met. Malaga and Atletico Madrid are both prepared to match that figure and end Almunia's six-year stay in north London.
