Arsenal vs Southampton: Player ratings

Standard Sport assesses the individual performances from Arsenal's 0-0 draw with Southampton at Emirates Stadium..

Mesut Ozil should twice have put the hosts ahead in an utterly atrocious first-half, though they would scarcely have deserved it.

Only a fortuitous reaction save from Fraser Forster was to deny the Arsenal man on 20 minutes, Ozil sneaking in behind the backline to seemingly tap in Olivier Giroud’s flick-on from six yards out. The Southampton keeper flicked an arm out and the ball deflected away.

Sadio Mane and Shane Long continued to test an Arsenal side careless in possession in behind, with Petr Cech and Laurent Koscielny having to be live to the attempts of their opponents to burst in behind.

The hosts improved in the second period, but then so did Forster. Early in the period he superbly palmed away a curling 18-yarder from Giroud; it set the tone for his half.

Arsenal were just as guilty of spurning chances, Koscielny heading over from six yards being the most egregious.

In what may just be a microcosm of their season come May they could not end this match feeling they did not have the chance to win it. But they blew it.
