Martin Keown labelled Arsenal’s handling of Mesut Ozil ‘embarrassing’ after the playmaker missed their defeat to BATE Borisov .

Ozil did not make the journey to Belarus for Thursday’s Europa League tie having not fully regained match sharpness following his latest illness.

The Gunners went onto lose the first leg tie with Alexandre Lacazette shown a straight red card to compound a miserable night.

During his appearance as a pundit on BT Sport, former Arsenal defender Keown questioned the German’s motivation.

"Is he injured, is he ill? One of the things as a player you have got to be available for selection and you want to give consistency," said Keown.

"And he hasn't been able to give either of those, so he has got to work to get back into the team. That is what the manager is asking for and that is what he has to do.

“It's actually becoming embarrassing now the Ozil situation.”

"To miss that amount of games is quite remarkable, isn't it? 100 matches in that period. I would say that is definitely questionable. We don't know, only the player knows.”
