Petr Cech accepted Arsenal career was over 'months ago' as he prepares for possible farewell

Petr Cech isn't thinking about potentially playing his last game as a footballer when Arsenal take on Valencia on Thursday night because he already mentally accepted such a fate earlier in the season.

Cech is set to start for the Gunners in the club's Europa League semi-final second-leg clash at the Mestalla, which could be his final appearance before he retires this summer if Valencia manage to overturn a 3-1 deficit and knock the Gunners out of the competition.

Arsenal still have to play Burnley away on the final day of the Premier League season, but Bernd Leno is Unai Emery's first-choice goalkeeper for the top-flight meaning Cech may taste his last action as a pro on Thursday night.

However, the 36-year-old says the fact that Arsenal appeared on the brink of elimination from the Europa League in previous rounds means he accepted long ago that he may have played his final match.

Speaking to reporters at the Mestalla, Cech said: "During the course of this campaign, we were in this position a few times. We lost away to [BATE] Borisov, so the home leg could have been the last game in Europe for me.

"Then we lost in France [to Rennes], same thing, this time with Napoli we won at home but we respected the opposition going to Italy. We knew it'd be difficult. I knew it could be potentially the last game for me in Europe.

"We gave ourselves a two-goal cushion, it's an advantage but not a decisive advantage. There will be ties overturned - football is about that.

"We respect them. Little details decided the first game. We were on the right side, we keep our feet on the ground. It'll be a hard 90 minutes."

Cech has not represented Arsenal in domestic competition since December after losing his place to Leno, though Emery has played his second-choice goalkeeper in European competition.

Asked how he maintains his form given his lack of match action, Cech said: "The key is in training. You train at your best, [and] together with my experience, prepare during the week.

"But even if you play regularly, then with my experience, I don't see a big difference between me. I feel ready for every game."
